In a small town like Hallam, community isn’t just a word, it’s a lifeline. Neighbors help neighbors, doors are always open, and when the sirens wail, you know someone you love is racing to answer the call.

One of those people is Fire Chief Ryan J. Skillett. Ryan didn’t just stumble into firefighting. As a kid, it was a dream. Years later, when members of Hallam Fire & Rescue asked if he’d like to join, he jumped at the chance. “To be able to help people of the community when in need, to answer the call, to face new challenges and learn new skills ,that’s why I do it,” Ryan says. Eleven years later, with four of those as Chief, he’s still showing up for Hallam every single day. And it’s not always easy. Ryan remembers one of his very first calls as an EMT a gentleman with chest pain who nearly refused care. With patience and compassion, Ryan and his team convinced him to go in. That decision saved his life. Weeks later, a letter of gratitude arrived at the department. “That kind of thank you,” Ryan says, “is the greatest reward we can receive.”
But here’s the truth: heart and grit can only take these volunteers so far. To continue saving lives, they need the right tools. This year, the department is raising funds for battery-powered extrication equipment a game-changer in emergencies. Instead of dragging heavy gear off the truck and wasting precious minutes, firefighters will be able to grab, go, and save lives faster. That’s where the Extreme Bull Riding Event comes in.

Every ticket you buy isn’t just a night of adrenaline-pumping rides, heart-stopping action, and rodeo fun. It’s an investment in Ryan, his crew, and the people they protect. It’s making sure that when the call comes in , whether it’s a car crash, a medical emergency, or a fire, Hallam’s volunteers have the tools to act quickly and safely.
For Ryan, it’s also personal. “Hallam is home,” he says. “I grew up here, and when my family moved back in 2013, I was reminded of how people come together. No matter our differences, we help one another when it matters most!”
So when the gates swing open, the bulls buck high, and the crowd roars, remember this: you’re not just watching a show. You’re standing behind every firefighter who straps on gear in the middle of the night. You’re backing the neighbors who rush toward emergencies when everyone else is running away.
Come for the thrill. Stay for the community. And know that every ticket sold helps keep Hallam safe. Grab your tickets today for the Extreme Bull Riding Event — because behind every ride is a hero like Chief Skillett.
