The Hallam Volunteer Fire & Rescue recently held a hands-on training session in partnership with Farmers Cooperative Hallam Agronomy. This collaboration focused on two critical areas for firefighter safety and effectiveness: Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) use and Search & Rescue operations. These training exercises are essential for preparing firefighters to face real emergencies with confidence and skill.

Strengthening SCBA Skills for Safety
SCBA gear is vital for firefighters when entering smoke-filled or hazardous environments. The training emphasized proper use, maintenance, and emergency procedures related to SCBA units.

Firefighters practiced:
Correctly donning and doffing the equipment under time pressure
Monitoring air supply and managing breathing techniques
Responding to equipment malfunctions or low-air situations
This hands-on approach helps firefighters build muscle memory and confidence. For example, during the session, trainees simulated low-visibility conditions to practice moving safely while relying on SCBA gear. This kind of realistic training prepares them for the disorienting conditions they may encounter during actual fires.
Search & Rescue Techniques in Realistic Settings
Search & Rescue is one of the most demanding tasks firefighters face. The training included drills where firefighters navigated structures to locate and extract victims. Key skills covered were:
Systematic search patterns to cover areas efficiently
Communication methods to coordinate with team members
Safe victim handling and evacuation techniques
Farmers Cooperative Hallam Agronomy provided a unique training environment with structures and materials that provided real-life obstacles. This setting allowed firefighters to adapt their techniques to varied conditions, improving their problem-solving skills during rescues.

A huge thank you to Farmers Cooperative Hallam Agronomy offering Hallam Volunteer Fire & Rescue space and resources enhancing the training experience.
